Module 1: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology

OBJECTIVES: In this module you will find a brief description of both fields of study.  By the end of module you will understand how the body is organized, use appropriate terminology to describe the placement of structures, and discuss how the body maintains equilibrium.  You will also understand the characteristics that distinguish living from non-living organisms and the hierarchy of complexity in organisms with multiple systems. Additionally, you will learn about the scientific method and the experimental process.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:
  • Explain the difference between anatomy and physiology.
  • Describe the components of the hierarchy of complexity.
  • Identify the 8 characteristics of life.
  • Know the organ systems and their general category of function.
  • Describe the structures of the body in anatomically correct position using directional terms.
