Module 8: Muscular System

OBJECTIVES: As seen in previous modules, there are three forms of muscle tissue.  We will briefly touch on cardiac and smooth muscle tissue, but will focus predominantly on skeletal muscle structure and function.  Within the discussion of function, we will cover the process of muscle contraction and metabolism.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:
  • Identify superficial muscles.
  • List the functions of muscle.
  • Describe the structure of skeletal muscle, including the associated connective tissue.
  • List the steps of muscle contraction and relaxation.
  • Describe the 3 types of ATP production.
  • Compare and contrast skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle.
